Ngadju Rangers

The Ranger Program supports Ngadju people to reconnect with Country, learn from Elders, and pass on knowledge to the next generation. It creates opportunities for employment, training and skills development.

Rangers work to keep Country strong and healthy – and in return, Country heals and strengths them. They operate across a vast and culturally significant landscape, managing everything from salt lakes and granite outcrops to old-growth woodlands.

Being a Ranger is not just a job, it’s a way of life – swags, campfires, sun and rain. It’s walking Country with respect, honouring the old ways and standing strong for Culture and Community.

Sunrise

Who wants to sleep in when the sunrise puts on a one-of-a-kind film? Before the workday kicks off, breakfast and hot cuppas are the only way to start the day right.

Water Trees

Ranger visit, protect and maintain these water trees, keeping the old knowledge alive.  Out on Country, they were vital for survival.  They are more than trees – they are part of the Ngadju story.

Morning

‘I slept so rough!’ Morning comes slow – smoke in the air draws Rangers from their swags, where warmth waits by the fire and the billy’s already boiling.

Indigenous Protected Area (IPA)

In 2020, a significant milestone was reached with the dedication of the Ngadju Indigenous Protected Area (IPA), covering 4.4 million hectares of the Great Western Woodlands. This area forms part of the largest intact temperate woodland left on Earth – an ecological haven that supports 30% of Australia’s Eucalyptus species and serves as a refuge for endangered birds and mammals.

The Ngadju IPA is one of only two areas in Western Australia declared under the Federal Government’s Indigenous Protected Areas program. This designation formally recognises Ngadju stewardship of Country and contributes to the National Reserve System, reinforcing out shared commitment to conservation and cultural protection.
